Woolen mills and the Underground in Pendleton

Pendleton's history is easy to see in two places: a mill that has made wool since 1909 and a set of passageways under the downtown sidewalks. This page gives the facts each one publishes about itself, with one link to each in the Sources list below. There is no endorsement here, and we do not list prices or hours, which change.

The woolen mill

The company's own history page says the Pendleton mill opened in 1909 under brothers Clarence, Roy and Chauncey Bishop, taking over an existing wool-processing building, and that the mill is still running. It says the original products were wool blankets and that the Bishop family still owns and operates the company. The page also says the Pendleton mill is open for tours. Wikipedia gives the same 1909 founding by the three brothers.

The Pendleton Underground

Pendleton Underground Tours describes itself on its own site as a non-profit established in 1989. It offers a guided tour of passageways beneath downtown sidewalks and of rooms from the city's past, including a card room, a laundry and an ice cream parlor. The site says the tours run year round, that reservations are required and that tour times vary, so call before you plan. Wikipedia notes that the claim that the tunnels are Chinese is disputed.
